Department of Health recognizes blood donors – FBC News

Fiji’s blood supply continues to be affected by certain diseases that cause constant bleeding.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said the ministry continuously needs voluntary blood donors as their work is focused on patients who need blood.

He says the blood supply has been affected during the COVID-19 outbreak, however, the support of Fijians who were willing to donate blood has enabled them to continue their work.

“Nothing can replace the purity of blood and so we have received blood as well as blood products and are grateful to the people who over the years have donated blood.”

The Ministry of Health and the Fiji Red Cross today commemorated World Blood Donor Day by inviting members of the public to donate blood to those who need it or will need it.

Fiji Red Cross disaster management coordinator Maciu Nokelevu says blood donors play an important humanitarian role in saving lives.

“We need blood for motherhood, we need blood for disasters, we need blood for the pandemic, every day there is a need for blood in Fiji and around the world.”

The theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day is “Blood donation is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives.
